The last of the thirteen colonies was established by charter in 1732, originally as a land for Britain's "worthy poor" - those forced to live in squalid conditions in prison just for owing debts or being homeless. Although founder James Oglethorpe's dream was never fully realized, Georgia did go on to become a wealthy and worthy colony and later state. Today it is still the economic hub of the south, with Atlanta being one of the world's main ports for trade and with a farming industry still very much alive.
Georgia's pleasant climate, safe communities and good quality of life have long attracted businesses that want to keep their employees happy. The state is also working on a number of initiatives to bring in and retain leaders in the technology world. For example, the Georgia Electronic Design Center project is helping to make Georgia a global leader in broadband communications and design.
