Vancouver is one of the world's most popular cities and draws millions of tourists annually. It often takes the first spot on quality of life surveys and consistently ranks highly on lists of the world's best cities. Nestled in southwestern Canada along the majestic Pacific Ocean, Vancouver offers its residents a mild, comfortable climate, ample recreation, art, and cultural opportunities, excellent educational offerings, and a healthy job market.
Employment
According to BC Work Futures, the computer industry offers plenty of opportunities through 2011. Growth rates for many computer-related occupations are forecast for incredible increases in that time period, including 36% for computer programming positions. Computer systems analysts are expected to increase positions by 33%, while computer engineers are predicted to experience 28% increases. Information systems and database manager are also forecast for great growth of 22%.
Some of Vancouver's largest employers are information technology companies, and include Telus Corp., Blast Radius Inc., BusinessObjects, and Sierra Systems Group.
Other major employers where students might find opportunities include Intrawest Corp., Finning International, Ecotrust Canada, and Seaspan International Ltd.
Education
Students have a wide variety of options for computer education in Vancouver. The University of Phoenix offers a bachelor's degree in e-commerce, while Simon Fraser University offers degrees in computer science, information technology, and interactive arts and technology.
Langara College has programs in computer programming, computer science, software development, and professional computer science and technology.
British Columbia Institute of Technology has programs in Cisco networking, computer information systems technology, computer business equipment technician, and database administration.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
British Columbia's Ministry of Advanced Education http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/awards/ provides students with scholarship, grant, and loan programs. Grants include Canada Study Grants, which offer financial need-based grants for students with permanent disabilities, part-time students, and students with dependents.
Scholarships include the Passport to Education, which is a motivational scholarship awarded to students in grades 10-12. The Premier's Excellence Award is a $5,000 scholarship awarded to the top student in each of the province's college regions. The Provincial Scholarship awards $1,000-$2,000 for seniors with excellent scores on the provincial exams.
Loans include the Canada Student Loan, which is a federally-subsidized loan that covers up to 60% of one's total tuition, and the British Columbia Student Loan, which is a provincially-subsidized loan.

Computer students will find everything they need and want in Vancouver.
