Known for its roles in alternative music and the modern day coffee shop, Seattle is a growing city in the northwest whose contributions to technology and computers have helped changed the face of the industry in America. Home to just over half a million residents, Seattle offers a mild climate that statistically does not have as much rain as its reputation might indicate. A laid back atmosphere, beautiful ocean and mountain views, and a growing job market make the city ideal for computer students.
Employment
According to the Great Seattle Datasheet, published by the city of Seattle, Seattle is ranked 5th in the nation for software jobs (as compared to the total population). Seattle is home to approximately 6,000 software-related companies that employ 68,000. This industry generates $10 billion annually in salaries and $25 billion annually in revenue. Microsoft alone employs around 29,000 individuals in the Seattle area.
Clearly, technology jobs in Seattle are plentiful and computer graduates have fantastic choices awaiting them. Projections through 2012 indicate that approximately 12,000 new computer-related jobs will be added in the region, while the greatest gains will be seen in computer programming (increases of 28%) and computer support specialists (20% increases).
Graduates might find exciting opportunities with Seattle companites that include software giant Microsoft, Boeing (Seattle's largest employer), Amazon.com, and Starbucks. Internship opportunities are also in great supply at each of these organizations.
Education
Seattle is home to great options for the aspiring computer professional, including the University of Phoenix, which has programs in e-commerce and information technology. The International Academy of Design and Technology offers degrees in animation, computer graphics, game design, information technology, multimedia, networking, and web development.
The Art Institute has degree programs in animation, multimedia, and web design, while Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington offer bachelor degrees in computer science.
ITT Technical Institute has programs in information systems, security software, computer and electronics engineering technology, and computer drafting and design.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
The Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board administers a number of financial aid programs to students, including the State Need Grant, which awards as much as $5,000 per year to students with the greatest financial need.
Another grant program is the Educational Opportunity Grant that provides $2,500 to advanced-standing students with financial need. Students must be in their third year of a bachelor's degree program or have earned an associate's degree and need the grant to be able to continue funding their education.
The Higher Education Coordinating Board also oversees the Washington Scholars Program, which awards as much as $5,500 to the top two graduates in each state school district who are pursuing higher education in the state of Washington.
